What is the success rate of mini dental implants?

Blog post Graphic 3 August.jpg

Dr. Andrea Joy Smith:

The success rate for all implants, whether they are large or small diameter implants, is about the same which is 95 to 96 percent. This is according to a study published in the September 2012 Dental Trade Publication called the Compendium that evaluated the long-term success rate of over five-thousand implants placed over a ten-year period. The success rate for those implants were found to be about 95 to 96 percent successful.”

Mini Dental Implants: Before & After

The patient pictured above came in with her grandmother who just wanted to see her granddaughter smile again. She was fairly young to have all remaining teeth extracted, but knew she was too young for removable dentures.  She had sought treatment at other office, but did not like the options she was given. Her grandmother received a mailer for my office and they scheduled an appointment. We treated her by removing all of her remaining teeth, placing implants on the top and bottom to support teeth that are fixed in place.. She has had a beautiful smile now for about 5 years.

This patient wore an upper denture for years but hated it. She also needed a full denture on the bottom, but did not want to have it done because she did not like the upper denture. She came in to investigate having fixed teeth that do not come in and out. We discussed fixed teeth supported with mini dental implants. We proceeded with treatment shortly thereafter. She loves her new smile and is getting married later this month.

Who is a good candidate for mini dental implants?

9 Aug

Blog post Graphic 1 August.jpg

Dr. Andrea Joy Smith:

People of all ages are good candidates for mini dental implants. For instance, if you are missing a single tooth, multiple teeth, or are wearing dentures and would like to have fixed teeth that do not come out; implants would work well for you. But, because of the minimally-invasive nature, I find that elderly and medically-compromised patients fair very well with this procedure.

Patients who have been missing their teeth for quite long time and therefore have less bone are also great candidates for mini dental implants. Mini implants are well-suited for people who have less bone because the procedure is not overly surgically invasive. This contributes to fast healing times for people receiving the mini dental implant.

What types of mini dental implant cases are typical at Andrea Joy Smith Family Dentistry in Sacramento, CA?

Blog Post Graphic 4 August.jpg

Dr. Andrea Joy Smith:

The needs of my implant patients span the full spectrum of possible circumstances. I have patients that need their existing denture stabilized, patients that are missing a single-tooth, and patients that are missing 2 to 3 teeth and are in need of of only a few implants. But, I also have patients who are in need of having all remaining teeth extracted and replaced by implants. And this procedure can typically be done in my office in a single visit. The teeth they are given on the initial visit post- xtraction are temporary, to be worn while the healing process takes takes place. I perform these procedures everyday in my office.

Also, I treat patients who wear removable dentures and convert them to fixed teeth that do not come out with the use of mini dental implants. This gives them a more natural way to go about their daily lives, similar to how they lived before their teeth were lost.

My aging population in particular has expressed the fear of their teeth being removed or taken from them if for any reason, they become hospitalized. Their confidence is then boosted as family members and loved ones visit them who are not accustomed to seeing them without teeth.

What makes a mini dental implant a good option for patients?

13 Jul

Blog Post Graphic 3 August.jpg

Patients who have missing teeth are often missing them for quite some time. Overtime, the bone associated with that tooth shrinks and decreases in size. The mini dental implant is a good option because there is no need to surgically increase the size of a patient’s bone. Mini dental implants are small enough to fit the reduced amount of the bone. Mini dental implants can then provide an immediate solution to the missing tooth problem. Because of this, a single-tooth or an implant bridge that replaces multiple teeth or even a full denture can be supported immediately without the 6-9 month wait-time sometimes required for an implant to receive its tooth.

What are the benefits of mini dental implants for patients?

13 Jul

Blog Post Graphic 2 August.jpg

Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth. Mini dental implants can benefit patients by replacing missing teeth in a minimally invasive manner.

Mini dental implants are the most modern way to replacing teeth, though there are other procedures that can be performed to fix the problem of missing teeth. There are removable partial dentures, fixed partial dentures, or even traditional dental implants.

The difference with mini implants compared to other procedures is that this procedure can usually be done without involving the surrounding teeth or requiring a large amount of bone. So, placing the mini dental implant makes the surgery less-invasive, which means less discomfort for patients, and there is an additional benifit of being less costly.
