The University of Texas Health Science Center’s School of Dentistry formally dedicated its new Center for Oral Health Care & Research during a public ceremony Thursday, noting the $96.5 million facility will serve patients from across South Texas.

The modern structure at 8210 Floyd Curl Drive houses the general and specialty dental care practices of the dental school’s faculty members. It also will be the place where dental school students undergo supervised, hands-on training.

The new building stands four stories tall and spans 198,000 square feet. It is equipped with more than 400 dental chairs. All of its exam rooms and surgical areas feature extra-large monitors to provide a better view of dental images.

The building also has a dental surgery operating room and an overnight recovery area.

A sky bridge will soon connect the new dental facility to the Medical Arts & Research Center next door, which houses the medical practices of 700 general physicians and specialty physicians on faculty at the health science center’s medical school. Connecting the two buildings will provide more convenience for patients seeking dental care and medical care at the health science center.
