#OralHealth and Romantic Relationships (via @TheraBreath)

We’ve all been there: You’re on a date with a person you really like, and everything is going fine. You’re feeling more comfortable with them so you reduce the amount of space between you, and bam! You’re hit with their terrible breath. Bad breath is an unfortunate, but it shouldn’t be a deal breaker. Oral health can have a big affect on how a person is perceived by others and this definitely extends to the dating world. While it might keep you from doing things you’d like to, don’t let it control a relationship.

Romance and bad breath
While it is totally understandable not to want to kiss someone with bad breath, chances are the person doesn’t know and the next time you go out things will be different. If the scenario above is familiar there are a few things you can do to help the situation.

  • Think about the foods you’ll be eating
If you’re going out to dinner with someone, the food you eat will have a direct effect on the smell of your breath. It’s a good idea to stay away from any food with a lot of garlic, onions, horseradish or tuna in it. All of these foods can cause bad breath. Also, the curry used in Indian food or the combination of ingredients in a gyro can cause your breath to be less than kissable. When eating out, try to go for things that don’t have really strong smells to begin with, and drink plenty of water. Water will wash away food particles and bacteria that can cause bad breath.
  • Carry some sugar-free gum
Sugar-free gum has been the savior for many dates. Just because you have a pack of gum in your pocket doesn’t mean you can throw all caution to the wind, but gum can freshen your breath and increase saliva production, which can help clean your mouth.

Cosmetic issues
Chipped, missing or discolored teeth are also a problem when it comes to dating. While these issues can be treated, they are typically a little tougher to deal with. A healthy smile can play a big role when it comes to looking for a romantic partner. Jason Derulo, the well-known singer, lists a pretty smile as one of the things he looks for in a significant other.

“I’m not into messy teeth. If the grill has spaces and different colors, it’s not my vibe,” Derulo told People Magazine.
