In collaboration with the American Dental Association, Naval Hospital Lemoore’s Dental Directorate recently celebrated National Children’s Dental Health Month.

In honor of the month, the hospital went out to promote dental hygiene awareness and educate children on the importance of maintaining proper dental hygiene to prevent tooth decay.

A group of dental officers and hospital corpsmen from Naval Hospital Lemoore visited more than 800 children ranging in age from 2 – 8 years old at Akers Elementary School, Neutra Elementary School and the Naval Air Station Lemoore Child Development Center. The visits included an animated video, hands-on activities and a visual presentation focusing on dental care and the prevention of dental disease and injuries.

The children displayed enormous interest and curiosity through their numerous questions answered by the dental team.

In Monterey, with the assistance of the Monterey Peninsula College Dental Assisting Class, Branch Dental Clinic Monterey staff brought dental health presentations to four kindergarten classes at La Mesa Elementary School.

The presentation included a children’s dental book titled “Sugarbug Doug” by Dr. Ben Magleby, along with hands-on activities on tooth brushing and flossing. Eighty children were inspired to defeat monster mouth.

“It is important for children to know that they can prevent tooth decay with good oral hygiene and healthy eating,” said Lt. Krista Mattson, Lemoore Branch Dental Clinic coordinator of this year’s event.

Parents with questions about their children’s dental health can visit, a website sponsored by the American Dental Association.

Active Duty military can enroll family members in the Tricare MET-Life Dental Plan by visiting or by calling 1-855-638-8371.
