RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) —

The Northern Nevada Dental Health Program helps children who are uninsured or under insured get the proper dental care they need.

The NNDHP Mobile Sealant Program visits 19 elementary schools throughout the region to help children understand the importance of proper dental care and prevent more serious oral health conditions by sealing six-year molars in second graders.

NNDHP Case Coordinator Dulce Quintero says sealing teeth helps reduce the risk of tooth decay by 60%.

“Dental sealants are extremely important, because they help prevent tooth decay in the future. It’s like a plastic shield that covers the tooth,” Quintero says.

NNDHP officials say in 2012 more than 100 dentists help 453 school children, totaling more than $400,000 in donated dental service.

“Where the state is unable to help support the program the dentist from this program have stepped up and donated money so that this program can continue, and these children can be screened, and they can be placed in dental care that they need,” Executive Director of Northern Nevada Dental Society Lori Benvin says.

According to Benvin, “a study of our third grade children in Nevada reveals that more than seven out of ten of Nevada’s third-grade students have tooth decay – compared to 53% of children aged six to eight across the country.”

The NNDHP Mobile Sealant Program will be at Bailey Charter Elementary School 4/29 through 5/1.
