Oral health should not be taken for granted

April is National Oral Health Month supported by the Canadian Dental Health Association. Many people are reminded that it is important to go to the dentist regularly, but the full reasoning is not always explained. Since many people have an intense fear of the dentist, understanding why it’s necessary to go on a regular basis may encourage otherwise nervous individuals to make an appointment. Bleeding and tender gums, toothaches, and oral infections, are common problems which are often ignored but can affect a persons quality of life. It is important to realize that your teeth not only provide the framework for your face, but they are of utmost importance when it comes to some of the most vital things we take for granted, like eating and speaking.

Dr. Shahian of South Star Family Dental, and an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry is very passionate about preventative care that helps patients maintain strong, healthy teeth for a lifetime.

“Each patient is unique, with their own needs and concerns,” says the affable Dr. Shahian. “I take the time to listen to, and individually address, each of their dental and oral conditions. This one-on-one approach helps me to provide our patients with personalized care.

Using up-to-date equipment, including state-of-the-art digital x-rays and lasers, Dr. Shahian examines and treats each patient’s dental needs and overall oral health.

“Utilizing lasers in dental procedures is a new approach to treat many conditions including: treating gum disease, dental abscesses, cold sores, and canker sores” says Dr. Shahian.

The best part of lasers is that they are effective, often don’t require anaesthesia (numbing), provide immediate relief and reduced postoperative discomfort and pain.

Our patient-centered practice offers comprehensive dental care with an equal commitment to preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry. At our clinic, our patients are our top priority. We value personalized attention and long-term relationships with our clients.

If it has been a while since you last visited a dentist, Dr. Shahian highly encourages you not to worry or be embarrassed. He recommends you contact a dentist. Dental professionals now realize that patients have anxiety about dental treatments and have developed skills to manage their anxiety and treat them in a soothing atmosphere.

South Star Family Dental offers free consultations and convenient evening and Saturday hours. They also electronically submit insurance claims for the patient, and gladly work with patients who have no insurance. New patients and emergencies are always welcome.
